This is a short book of four ghost stories. I have found Susan Hill’s ghost stories a bit hit or miss in the past so I was not expecting much. I really did enjoy this book although I enjoyed the last two stories the most. The stories were very creepy but not too frightening.
The first story is the title story about a psychic private investigator recalling recalling her most memorable case. A story of betrayal, revenge and madness.
The second is set in a boarding school were Toby an outsider makes a new friend called Andreas. One day Andreas disappears.
The third was my favourite. A new girl starts in the office but nobody likes her very much as she keeps herself to herself. Then people notice an odour attached to her and then strange things start happening in the office.
The last story was about a family who take the priests sermon to heart and decide to offer the husbands stepmother who is not a very nice person a room in their home as they realise she is lonely. They soon come to regret their decision.
I would highly recommend this book. It is a great book for those who like a ghost story but don’t like to be too scared.

Four well-written, atmospheric ghost stories, except the title story which has no ghosts but does have a big inconsistency in it. I didn't find the first three stories scary ("The Front Room" was a bit), but I had inexplicable nightmares two days in a row, and trouble sleeping. I was also expecting gaslamp fantasy, but the last two stories are in a modern setting, and that kills the mood a bit. Other than that, a very nice collection, I'll definitely read more of Susan Hill.

Of the 4 stories I enjoyed 2, found 1 to be ok and disliked the other. I loved the atmospheric writing as I have with previous Susan Hill stories but found that I just didn't engage as well with the characters in any of the short stories as I would usually.
I listened to this as an audiobook which made it even more atmospheric and would definitely recommend that. I think I may just stick to full length books by this author in future.

After reading the first story I came home to find a dead moth on my living room floor and then one flying round my bathroom......... to say the least I was creeped out.
I wanted to give this 3.5 stars
These 4 stories are more creepy than scary. I liked story number 1, number 2 and 3 were ok and number 4 really creeped me out.
Very short, easy read
Although I wasn’t sure on the writing style I felt it wasn’t clear enough for me I felt I wasn’t understanding vital parts in the stories.
Worth a read I did enjoy it overall and will read more of Susan Hill
