My review of this book is cheapened by having read another contemporary book too recently, so some of the themes of loneliness and relationship miscommunication rubbed me the wrong way through no fault of Stanley. These realistic adult romances can feel very hopeful and meaningful but I didn’t feel there was very much character growth throughout this book which made it painful and tiresome to read at points. It was enjoyable enough throughout the reading process but I don’t feel it left a mark on me after finishing it, despite being objectively rather well written. I think the cover remains my favourite part of this book.

a super enjoyable read - having spent a very defining time of my life in east london during the same period meant a lot felt like it resonated.

A flawed attempt with tiresome characters, esp. the main one. The children were the best part of the book.

While there were relatable aspects to losing yourself in motherhood, I think this book ultimately made me sad for the state of a life without God in it. Also quite detailed on the state of British politics, which was more than I cared for. I did also like the ending, but just wonder how many people out there live their life feeling this way and it makes me sad.
