We attempted our first chapter book this week, Sparkleton: The Mini Mistake.

Unicorns are always a hit in my house. Sparkleton is the third book in the series but was fine to read as a stand-alone. The unicorns are waiting/wishing for their powers and preparing for a talent show. Sparkleton is upset that Twinkle has gotten wish granting powers (the power he wants). When Sparkleton and his friends are accidentally shrunk they need Twinkle’s help to get back to normal size.

I liked that the author periodically told you how much you had read (number of words, chapters, etc). My kids thought the story was entertaining and asked me to keep reading a few times. Personally, I felt like some chapters weren’t necessary and the book would have been better if it had focused on either getting back to normal size or the talent show.

Ultimately, having Sparkleton realize that he was unfairly judging Twinkle was a nice message. We talked about what powers they would want and what it would be like to suddenly be tiny. The book has enough pictures to keep smaller children interested.
