A really fun epic that explores trans and gender noncomforming people as main characters (yay!) but I honestly couldn’t love the main character. which is cool in its own way, but not engaging enough for me to want to see it through.

I really wanted to love this book because it has such rave reviews, but ultimately it was just boring and lacking details. Things happen for plot reasons but we don't really get to see the build up to these things. I would have loved to see more time at the monastery, the direct aftermath or how Zhu survived, more of her relationships with her soldiers, everything.
