I loved Artie and Sarah finally having THAT conversation. I did not love the cliffhanger.

I like a series that shifts POV characters, and I love this series generally, and I even like Sarah as a POV. I loved many of the individual bits here (so much delightful dialog and character interaction, a grandma cameo, Sarah getting her own mice clergy, etc etc etc), but it was probably my least favorite plot arc/mystery of the bunch. The mystery wasn't that interesting, and, well... Stakes: the literal destruction of the entire planet (possibly universe). Spoiler (not really): universe did not end. We never thought it would, or that any main characters would die, and this was one of those times where throwing them into obviously impossible, surely-you-will-die-now situations just got a little tiring.
HOWEVER. It was absolutely terrific setup for the next book, which sounds completely crazy pants and totally unpredictable, and I'm very much looking forward to it.

Oof, this one took a bit to get into. I wasn't a huge fan of Sarah to be honest and hearing over and over how terrible cuckoos are was a bit tiring. I get it.

Still moving ahead and very glad I have the next book all ready to go. (Cliffhanger!)

In the ninth installment of the Incryptid series, Sarah takes the spotlight. She's spent the last few years recovering from hurting herself, and now she's ready to get back to her life. That means leaving home and getting back to her family in Oregon. It means being independent. It means seeing Artie again, for the first time in five years. And when she discovers that another cuckoo has taken up residence in Portland, it also means confronting the part of herself that she hates the most: her species.

I always look forward to new installments in this series. It's become a series that I can rely on to always deliver an enjoyable adventure, with a splash of romance and a ton of magical creatures. This installment didn't disappoint. I feel like every time the series switches characters, I get nervous, but this time proved to be even more unfounded than usual. I really enjoyed Sarah's point of view. She comes across from the outside as being very mild-mannered, and maybe a bit boring, but I actually had a really good time with her in this book. I liked seeing how many of her actions were influenced by her cuckoo heritage, and how very hard she tries to live up to her own ideals.

I also, surprisingly, was kind of into the romance with Artie. It still feels squicky to have them refer to each other as cousins, even knowing that there's no blood relationship whatsoever, but as long as I could gloss over that little detail a bit, I found them to be a lot of fun. I liked the way that they're so careful with each other, because each has the potential to influence the other (or at least thinks they do). It gave their relationship just enough interest to make me like them more than I expected to.

As for the plot of this, well, I can't say too much, given we're at this point in the series, but let's just say that things get crazy. This book, which I expected to be fairly tame, ended up being one that will have far-reaching consequences. In fact, it may be the most impactful of the books yet! And that ending! Damn, I almost hate that I finally read this because I did not appreciate that cliffhanger! Still, I guess I can't complain too much, since I basically inhaled this book. Definitely a worthy addition to the series, and I honestly can't wait to see what happens in the next book.

I love this series. Every time a new book comes out I immediately put it on my TBR list. However, this one fell a bit flat for me. Sarah has finally overcome the traumatic brain issue that she has been struggling with for 5 years. Turns out that it was actually her maturing into a stronger cuckoo. And have I said how much I hate cliffhangers....

In the full series I've always really loved Sarah's character and I was pleased to have her featured here! Can't wait for the next one.
