Covers a span of heavy subject matter but is overall a positive read because of the good-natured characters. Still relevant today despite being written in 1988! The plot can be meandering and relaxed, but I wasn’t bored. Kinda has a similar vibe to steel magnolias, can’t quite explain it.

as always, so beautifully written… barbara kingsolver has such an amazing way of weaving in meaning from the title (poisonwood/bean trees) that always catches me by surprise, even though i know to expect it. i not only learn about plants and history and the present, but feel so connected to the characters. they really do feel so tangible! <3

This book holds a special place because it was sent to me by a friend who has volunteered with me and she felt it reflected our dynamic of her sending me supplies and me being on the ground. Bring compared to Mattie is an honor.

I love the whole story and how community and family are what you make it. We are more the same than we are different when we come together and work to survive. A great read and reminder of this.
