i thought this would be longer what! im surprised its one of her shorter works
as usual, in love with her biting writing style and her commentary on her society, especially since she dipped more of her toes into gender commentary. i jst wished we saw more of the young romance 8 years prior, that wouldve been interesting

maybe this is harsh but oh my god i do not care about these characters. something about this book just completely lacked what i have loved about other austen books and it was not nearly as enjoyable to get through in comparison. sure, it could be worse, it wasn't all bad, but holy god it was so entirely mid. i could have been fine with never reading this, sorry jane, love you girl
I’m half agony, half “empty” here.
Um, I struggled with her complex and long sentences, which is kinda strange because her language wasn’t hard to get into. But I kept zoning out most of the time. Tbh, Jane Austen is a sly genius. One admirable quality of Jane is that she never pretended her novels to be more than they are. She never tried so hard. She can be the most “unpretentious” writer of her time, too. It’s so lovely.
But here’s the thing. I read Persuasion just for Anne Elliot, Jane Austen’s quiet, steadfast, introverted heroine unlike her other sassy and spunky heroines. I was so excited to get inside her head and to devour the second-chance romance between her and Captain Wentworth. But it turns out Anne’s silent suffering of heartbreak and longing weren’t explored enough. She was just there existing and quietly observing other characters. Most of her parts served as a social mockery-mechanic to her father, her sisters, and Mr. Elliot. Her love story was rashly unraveled only on the last pages.
Despite that, the letter was quite an emotional punch. Jane proved her point that in the Regency era where all single women past age 26(?) were considered unworthy and marriage was the only way to climb the social ladders, Anne still unyieldingly held onto her one true love for Wentworth despite not knowing surely he’d return her sentiments, making Persuasion one of the most powerful and melancholic romantic tales of all time. But I’m just glad that I wasn’t born in that era. Sorry. I didn’t love this book.

I LOVE THIS BOOK. It is very subtly built up but by the end of it, you are intensely reading the book and hoping for the happy ending. It's written beautifully however the main character is a little unrealistically caring in the face of her family's stupidity.
