After picking up and putting down read Eat, Pray, Love five times, I thought I'd never be a fan of Ms. Gilbert's. But I saw here speak last year and really enjoyed her speaking voice, over her writing voice. I really like her as a person. She was insightful. So when she wrote a book about her ambivalence to marriage, I looked forward to it. Committed was very conversational. Like talking to a friend about one's doubts about marriage. I enjoyed it. Some things I already knew were reinforced, awoken and many things were insights. So overall, it was a great read. Like a long letter from a best friend, that you had always been able to philosophize with.

I really want to give it 3.5 stars. A lot of it was interesting and thought-provoking, but in other parts, it was very rambling. I enjoy Elizabeth Gilbert books overall, though, and look forward to some more.

Full review to follow, but let's just say my issues with references and citations were never resolved. THAT sucked royally, no matter what I may have felt about the rest of the book (some good, some bad, not as good as other, very similar books).

I was not a big fan of Gilbert's previous ultra-bestselling book E,P,L. So I was in no hurry to read this one. But after a friend recommended it a couple of months ago, I decided I might as well try it. Gilbert examines the institution of marriage from just about every angle you can imagine. Starting as a cynic about marriage, she eventually and somewhat surprisingly makes her peace with it by the end. I found it fascinating, with just the right mix of research and personal anecdote. Great book.
