Dare I say, I preferred the first book. Now hear me out!!! I felt confused most of the time (maybe it’s me, maybe I’m the problem) - the plans didn’t make sense to me, there were loose ends, & can some explain why Matthias had to die from this random ass druskelle boy? How did he even find them after they traveled on a boat? And how did he escape said boy and stumble back to Nina? Idk seems a little forced if you ask me. I will stand on business when I say Nina is ~that~ girl & she deserves the world (or her own book).

Basically picking up right where Six of Crows left off, Crooked Kingdom is basically just More Six of Crows but Done Slightly Better. The twists narrative slights of hand are better seeded and more fulfilling as a result, and the internal journey for some of the characters were really well developed. Sadly, a lot of the more interesting parts (for me anyway) in Nina`s new powers and the random New Assassin felt underdeveloped, or at least not explored as much as I wouldve liked. Overall, though, definitely liked the duology and liked the 2nd book a bit more than the first.
only came back here for inej and kaz (of course), stayed for my girl nina
OMG!!! This book was one of the best books I have read in a long time!!! I think the last really good book I read was "The Court of Mist and Fury" (which is my favorite book as of right now) but "Crooked Kingdom" is definitely my second favorite book. SOOOO much better than the first one and the first book was some real competition!
The characters are just flat out amazing!!! I mean I can't get enough of Kaz finally a character thats not only complex and dark but his darkness is confusing and all time consuming. A villain character that doesn't hide his wickedness! At last a evil character that isn't so boringly cliche. Even though he has many flaws and does impossibly mean things you still can't help but love him and side with his choices no matter how rash they are.
And then theres Inej who is tied with Kaz as my fav character in the series. Inej is amazing because she is the badest, and bravest of the group. Plus her skills at being the Wraith are down right UNBELIEVABLE! I can't praise enough of how much her and Kaz together are just flat out amazing. Like magic really. I haven't read a book in a long time when two characters are just so shamelessly themselves , flaws and all, and yet they understand one another in a way that goes beyond words!!! It made it impossible to put this book down. Literally every time Kaz and Inej would have a conversation I would be glued to the page and paralyzed with suspense!!! The intensity between them was fabulous!
This book would honestly make a GREAT movie. Im serious. Get the producers of an action film like "pirates of the Caribbean" and you'd have a serious hit. Every page someone was nearly shot or their was some wild explosion. Plus can we just take a minute to appreciate the amazing way Leigh Bardugo was able to come up with those plot twists!!! I mean Kaz was an unbelievable genius whose schemes were equally unbelievable yet somehow wildly achievable. I mean I was literally smiling at the end of the book just because of the shear cleverty of it all.
Overall I really liked all the characters in the book. Jespers hilarious commentary (literally I laughed out loud), Wyalns cute embarrassed blushing, Ninas fierceness and ability to love herself, I even liked Matthais and his code of honor. All of them together made a dream team of thugs I grew to love as they made the book series what it is, a truly enthralling unputtdownable read! I mean the level of complexity of each character and their rich backgrounds were just awesome!
TOTALLY recommend this series!!! One of my all time favs!
