there was so much character growth for everyone in this book and i’m obsessed, this is the best soc book hands down and i cannot wait to reread this duology again

Holy hell was that a good book. I didn't think it could get any better than the first book, but somehow it did. This duology carved a little space for itself in my soul and I'm tempted to reread it immediately just to fill that hole back up. If I could give this six stars I would. The best part is that the ending left so much room for further story, and Leigh Bardugo has already said that this series will continue sometime in the future. Honestly that day can't come soon enough. I smiled, I cried, and I spent many hours gripping the sides of this book waiting to see what happened next. Fantastic duology.

I have such a hard time putting my thoughts about this book to paper. Normally I take notes while reading a book, so I can remember every important detail. With this book however, I took zero notes because no scene struck me as memorable or remarkable enough to be remembered (besides one particular encounter that left me quite speechless. But more on that later).

Let’s start with the positive:

The first book focused on introducing the characters, showing their history and how they work with each other. In Crooked Kingdom the characters are well known and established and so their relations and feelings between the six of them are the main theme (beside the actual plot). Relationships are shown more in depth and give the characters a new dimension of depths. I really enjoyed reading the dialogues and getting a different perspective from the various points of view.

The book relies heavily on dark and heavy themes, so a character such as Jesper was like wind beneath the wings. Even though he has big problems to deal with, he never loses his wit and humour. I like how he doesn’t take life too seriously and isn’t afraid to take risks. His attitude in a merciless place such as Ketterdam was very refreshing for me and I enjoyed every chapter from his POV.

I longed for every scene between Inej and Kaz. I love their dynamic and vulnerability, which seems to complement each other perfectly. This one scene (and if you have read this book, you’ll know which scene I’m referring to…) left me speechless, because it was written so damn perfect. I literally felt the tension and the sparks myself.

On to the 'bad' parts:

I like the style of Leigh Bardugo and appreciate her writing, but I had a difficult time getting through this book. It draaaaaagged quite badly. Some twists weren’t necessary and took away from the tension and the continuity of the plot.
I personally prefer character-heavy books to plot-heavy books.

But in the end, I had a great time reading the duology of Six Of Crows and Crooked Kingdom and enjoyed my journey into a new fantasy world.
