I cannot continue with this story as it is too disturbing. I know these things have happened and continue to happen, but I cannot read about it. I do not like reading about child abuse or spousal abuse. That being said, I know this young man can write and I will check out his next stories, but am leaving this one behind.

A devastating and vivid story of the resilience of children, despite the wicked world they’re born into.

Turtle lives isolated from the world with her survivalist father. She has been trained since birth to trust no one and to prepare for anything. When she stumbles upon some boys from the city in the woods, she’s perplexed at their carelessness and jealous of their happiness. As she begins to learn more about the outside world and to better understand the pain her father has inflicted upon her, she also begins to rebel. Can she escape the physical confines of her father and home, as well as the emotional confines that growing up isolated and abused have caused?

I’m not exaggerating when I say that this is the best book I’ve ever read in my life - no less than a modern-day classic. Tallent’s beautifully descriptive writing paints a portrait of a tranquil Northern California forest and seaside, which starkly contrast Turtle’s abusive life. Her character progression is slow and strained, and meticulously detailed. Tallent tackles some extremely tough themes, including incestuous pedophilia and abuse, and while I love this novel, I don’t necessarily recommend it to everyone else. Take care of yourself while reading it!

I hated this book for a variety of reasons, but this excerpt will sum it up:

They follow Bodhi to a cottage, the eaves hung with witch's hair, moss growing between the shingles, and they go into a warm interior with a woodstove in one corner. A naked woman sits cross-legged on a wooden pedestal, eating cherry tomatoes from a lacquered wooden bowl. Jacob's eyes goggle in surprise. The woman is olive-skinned, with wiry black hair bundled in hemp cords, her face pretty and open, her nipples big, the areolas soft brown and goose-bumpy, her belly somewhere between soft and firm, the skin healthy looking but worn. Her pussy has two little interior pieces of flesh hanging out. Turtle's own pussy is as trim and compact as an anemone bunkered down to wait out the tide.

I will probably remember this and get even angrier later and write more, but for now, I want to just let that sit.

I honestly don’t know how I feel about this book. I hated it at times, really liked it other times, and was disgusted a lot. My favorite part of the whole book was her adventure with Jacob and Brett. It was a breath of fresh air to read such fun dialogue after the painful slowness of dialogue with her father and grandfather.

So much happened in this book I feel like I remember it in parts. Half the time I didn’t know what the dad was saying, but I think that was the point? Sometimes I feel like it was too descriptive, but I also liked how descriptive the author was about the nature are area they lived in. It was such a big part of who Turtle was.

Man this is a tough one to review and read. Tough scenes to read and yet it was hard to put down. I admittedly saw the climax of the book coming pretty early but I'm also not sure that it would have mattered. Overall worth it to expand your reading horizons

A powerful story of absolute love and its consequences, written with lyricism and fine detail. Not a story to enjoy, but one to make us think.

Perhaps the one star is not fair because I did not finish this book.
I listened to it and it was painful to endure. I don't care how good a book has been reviewed, I feel like the author needs to justify the abuse thrown at the reader and yet I never saw any justification. You know when you read (or listen) to a book and the words and dialogue, especially in regards to women (or in this case a daughter), just scream of a man?
Maybe I am missing out by not finishing it but I doubt it.
Also, I wish I had been warned about the disturbing content.

Well written, but I just couldn't get past the abuse depicted.
