I have very little to say about this book, besides the fact that I wish I liked it more. Mildly disappointed.

Surprisingly, of the few war novel romances I've encountered, Kochan and Sonoko's was the most enjoyable. The relatively slow pace of their connection (due in large part to Kochan's "difficult temperament") made it seem much more meaningful than those in A Farewell to Arms and The Joke. This is not because it was the love in Mask was any less perverse than the others -- far from it; rather, it is because Sonoko is treated like a person rather than a plot requirement. In fact, her inclusion is so at odds with the traditional "plot" of Mask that she very nearly completely stalls the main character's development -- something that ironically greatly improves the novel.
