Oh; sigh; wow. On one hand this book is a perfect sweeping arc over one woman's full and challenging life; on the other hand, this book is a collection of intimate stories with details so sharp that they caused physical reactions (heart-wrenched, sick to my stomach, or laughing out loud!). Listening to Louise Erdrich narrate her own book is such a treat; this is how I plan to continue to experience her books for the next while.

Listened via Hoopla.

Really well-written (she must have a great editor!), great descriptions, the story was also complex and you could really enjoy the characters and their flaws. I'm glad I read it. If you like historical fiction of everyday people, you'll like this.

Loved the audio. Her characters and post WWI setting were so vivid. Want to read again in print

This story is unlike any other work of fiction told in this time period before. Erdrich’s prose almost reads like poetry in this novel thanks to its creatively vivid and enchanting imagery. The plot follows a litany of different characters that would often make it hard to follow a story, but Erdrich beautifully and skillfully intertwines the stories of these characters as the reader are revealed smaller morsels of the greater story, crisis, and mystery that keeps them coming back for more. I could keep reading this book again and again.

When this book came up in my neighborhood book club as the book for April, I did not plan to read it - it just didn't sound that good to me. However, I needed to go on a long drive, so I got the book on CD read by the author (fabulous!) along with another book on CD in case I didn't like this one. This book took me in from the very first few pages. It was unlike any other pioneer/immigrant/Indian/20th c. German story I had ever heard or read. I loved the character of Delphine - her straightforward, no-BS attitude, her loyalty, her industry, her survivor instinct. I also really appreciated the writing, the development of the characters, the details about the people and the places, and their experiences.

It's been a long time since I really got lost in a book. A beautiful read.

My mom told me I would love this one, and she was right. I couldn't put it down. I felt connected to every character in the story and was sad when it ended.
