Sexuality? Freedom? Written during a rebellious time, she stays with Rochester, returns to him, because she chooses happiness in this life and he engages her mind. 
Her refusal of St John is a refusal of the idea that the only life worth living is the next. Poor Bertha, who deserved better. 
Surprisingly engaging and passionate, an absolute favourite, I must read more of Charlotte Brontë as well as her sisters

I read this book when I was 12 years old. I remember plugging my nightlight next to my bed and pulling the covers over my head and the light so I wouldn't be caught reading past my bedtime. I now realize that my mother probably wouldn't have minded too much knowing her 12 year old was reading Charlotte Bronte and not Sweet Valley Teens, but perspective sometimes comes too late. :)

I loooooved this. I read it when I was 11 and then re-read when I was 15 or 16. So beautiful, heart-wrenching, with a fair share of darkness and mystery.
