A fantastic piece of literature. I thoroughly enjoyed this. The style of writing was delightful to read—flowery in the way old books are, but with an excellent flow that made it very easy to read.
The character of Jane is interesting to me. She’s strong willed, but is also extremely influenced by the people around her.
I think one of the most fun parts about reading this book for me was thinking about the interplay between the time it was written and now. What did the author intend at the time, and with what biases did she write? How does it read on face value now, and how have the biases shifted so as to change how it lands? The differences between gender relations, class relations, religion, etc, are so clearly seen and examined.

Bertha deserved better, from the characters and the author.
I felt none of the romance. The first: double her age, literally her boss, exerts his power to control her (i.e. refusing the pay owed to her when she plans a short leave), intentionally manipulates her emotions, lies about some pretty significant things. I saw grooming, not romance. Next up we get an incestuous ‘romance’. I know, product of its time.
I see how novel would read as feminist at the time. Jane exerting her agency to stand against the demands of the men who have power over her and being willing to put herself at risk to remain independent. Though of course reading this in our current day, it’s clearly a very singular form of feminism. Jane is a very specific type of woman, she fits all of societies standards, the exception being her (then) feminist attributes. While her upholding her strict morals despite pressure to do otherwise is an act of feminism, those morals are largely grounded in ‘Godliness’ and societal rules, rather than grown from her own conclusions.
I went into this book blind, expecting it to be similar to Pride and Prejudice.
It wasn't, but not to its detriment. I found it very beautifully written, and I adored the main character. I thoroughly enjoyed watching her grow up, her journey in life. The story was long, including many elements: some better than others. Helen was my favourite character, I daresay she left a lasting impression. I didn't love every element of this book, but I very much enjoyed the complete picture.
4/5.

Yall bitches on tiktok being hella dramatic with Rochester THE MAN IS NOT EVEN THAT BAD
Though it was prescribed for study in my college, it took me 5 whole years to take up this book & read. And I'm pulled between two thoughts...
Why did I wait this long? Because I just loved Jane Eyre.
But If I had read it then as an 17 year old, would I have appreciated it like I do now? Quite doubtful.
