This is one of my absolute favorite books. I am someone who lives in a city that isn't very lively and active throughout the year. Not much goes on. So when I was younger I wanted adventure, something different, something so absolutely amazing that it would take me to a completely different world. Turns out, this book did't take me to a different world, but let me explore my own world in a totally exciting and creative way. Imagine, traveling around the world in a hot air balloon!! It's just too awesome! The characters were great and I really felt as if I were traveling right along with them. That, I think is why I love this book so much; I enjoy books that can just take me anywhere and make it believable.
Jules Verne is probably one of my favorite authors, not only because of the stories he tells, but also the way he tells them. His writing is very clear and easy for younger readers looking for more mature books. I read this book when I was in fifth grade and could understand every word he wrote. I highly recommend all of his works (or at least all of the works that I have been able to get to so far) to anyone looking for an adventure in their monotonous lives.

This classic seemed more like a children's book than anything else. It also seemed a bit dated in two ways: In the nineteenth century travelling around the world might have seemed fantastical to readers, but today it seems rather commonplace. Also the way non-Europeans are talked about seems outdated in the usual, colonial-minded way.
