it‘s very slowpaced and kind of boring, the eurocentric, colonial worldview made me uncomfortable

A classic pulp adventure, important for what it is and for its time I’m sure. Basically a series of vignettes from various exotic locales- some are quirky and a bit fun, the shot at Mormons and Americans in general is pretty great as a “yank” , obviously this book is racist but possibly not more than its contemporaries? There are better Jules Verne books with more interesting characters. You will not find much more than Boys Life style tales of derring-do here. But not bad

Bank robbers, daring rescues, druggings, kidnap, Indian attacks, colorful characters... What an adventure! I thought this was a fun and delightful read, though I would have liked more detail in certain parts (especially with the Sioux on the train) and I would have liked Fogg more fleshed out during his transformation. Oh to be an independently wealthy, stoic, Englishman with nothing but time on his hands! Who can ever figure out that meddling Detective Fix? And oh that Passepartout and his silly antics! I kept picturing the "de plane! de plane!" guy.

My favorite line: "Passepartout wept till he was blind, and felt like blowing his brains out." (And this was not a "modern" translation but the classical one)
