“they say there’s no honor among thieves. i guess that’s true. but is that exclusive to thieves? maybe there’s just no honor, period”
the author did all they could, using an outside view of the joker is really all you can do cuz first person perspective would never work. i just miss camp joker & if there was ever a time for an art style where you just keep adding lines, this was it but i still hate it

Very triggering. Not a fun read in the slightest. Would not reread nor would I recommend it tbh. Decent story and incredible artwork though.

Batman ala gangster flick
Have avoided Azzarello like the plague since watching the adaptation of The Killing Joke he was involved with. Him paired with the equally skeevy Sam Liu resulted in one of the most horrendous butcherings of female characters I've seen from comic book source material. I had hope this wouldn't be as dimwittedly, subconsciously misogynistic, but the only women in this are strippers, "whores", and "skags" — decoration, and mostly naked. When you're writing a gritty old-school Gotham set story with the most despicable DC villain, with the fixings of a mob movie, it's very easy to attribute these things to the context of the story. But nah, this is simply a pattern of writing and it's too obvious to be interesting or palatable. Other than that, good Joker comic, especially if you're into the seedy Gotham underworld. Art was nice

I'll give credit to the "idea" of it all. Watching a more realistic Joker is never a bad thing. Well, unless it's boring. In which case this book is.
SO we start off with a low level thug picking up Joker from prison after somehow getting out on "good behavior" or "not insane" anymore. Cause that's how it works in Gotham. If you killed hundreds but promise to be good from now on, you get out...right...
So we go through the daily routine of Joker the gangster. Slapping up some people, using his people to force other gangs (two face) to back down. Killing people because he can. This is a broken man, a man who relies on pills, who falls to his knees for Harley, who is just a weak man. Not at all like the Joker I wanted, not the master of chaos and destruction, but a bitter man who can't seem to get what he wants in life.
The overall story is pretty meh. There's some great moments (the flaying, the final two pages) but the rest seems "dark" just to be "dark" and "edgy" and it lost me a lot of the time when I expected something surprising but instead was returned with generic mobster movie/book moment.
A 2 out of 5 for the good art, and some wonderful moments, mixed in with a lot of weak storytelling and predictable story overall.
