"I think of the bougainvillea
I left on a pot on my porch,
how the man at the nursery
had told me to keep it
rootbound, that it wouldn't bloom
unless it was stressed out, those
were his words, stress it out,

as if cruelty was a necessary condition for beauty."

A short and a quick read. I enjoyed it but I also didn't if that makes sense. The poems were good. I ended up highlighting many parts and related deeply to one of the poems but there was something missing. It was the title that drew me to this book and reading the synopsis made me pick it up. But I think I was disappointed. The description and title made promises they couldn't keep. It's true that the last part focused more on the idea of Scheherazade with different nights and poems but still, I feel like the idea of writing "The Journals of Scheherazade" or women in general through poetry was great but it wasn't explored to the fullest which caused a disappointment for me. :/
