This was fine! A good, creepy horror story for October. UNFORTUNATELY, I convinced myself it was going to be more queer than it was, so I ended up let down by the plot. But that’s a case of expectations vs. reality, not the fault of the book. Solid writing, a few great twists and turns. Perfect for the fall.

Loved the premise but disliked the execution.

I really hated the fact that the demon ended up being bad after all. Like it was such an interesting premise that someone who was exorcised would want their demon back and then would try and get it back. The fact that in the end it just seemed to be some large metaphor or was just holding her back from real people felt boring as hell to me. I'm not here for a girl learning she has to let go of a toxic influence, I was here for demon-human friendship that triumphs over so called Good.

It turns out that was not at all what the story was about. Boo.

I had a really great time reading this books! It was a new and interesting take on a possession story, and one that I can't recall having ever seen or read before. Clare has her demon cast out of her by a preacher and his son, but she longs to have the demon back with her. She's a lonely teenage girl who feels like she has no one in the world to rely on now that they've taken Her (what she calls her demon) away.

As we get deeper into the story we unravel a mystery involving most of the influential people in Clare's mall town, a lot of secrets, and an unexpected love story. While it can be predictable at times that certainly never took me out of the story or made me slow down in my eagerness to see the ending.

If you're looking for some horror this spooky season but want something a little more mild then I suggest snagging this one!

The way the main character was written was a bit confusing. Sometimes it felt like she was 8 years old, sometimes maybe 12, and very rarely the 16 year old that she was supposed to be. I liked the concept of the story, but it wasn't executed as well as I had hoped.
