ā€œ What happens to those childhood monsters when there are no more shadows to hide in? Do they leave? Do they move on? Or do they simply learn to live in the light? ā€ž

I enjoyed this as much as the first! The art was, as expected, phenomenal in a horrifying way, and I really enjoyed the new characters introductions and the way their stories connected with the characters we already knew. I like where this story is headed but, annoyingly, this volume was more filler than it was plot. Even so, Iā€™m excited to continue with the series to see how the story unfolds :)

Closer to a 4.5 than a 4. I can't wait to read the next volume.

4/5 I really liked it.

"Smart, literary even, this series looks to be the cure for the plague of feyness among modern vampires." - Booklist

That is how I feel about this book, even though Stephen King is no where to found in this volume, Scott Snyder continued on with the story. Bringing us to the the years after the events of Volume 2.
I like how the mythology of the vampires in this story, on how just like any other species, the younger generation is faster, stronger, better. The characterization is superb and I like how it is not solely focused on one character alone, as if the domino effect from volume 1 created this wave of events that made me not to put down the book.

This volume is comprised of two stories - Devil in the Sand and The Way Out.

Devil in the Sand introduces us to a new character, Chief Cashel 'Cash' McCogan, who is joined by Felicia Book, grown-up daughter of Jim Book. This story was ok, and we saw Skinner and Pearl in it a little bit, but, overall, it was kind of a 3 star story. It left things open for an interesting turn down the line, but it didn't have the intimacy and interest of the first volume.

Also, I would've liked to see Felicia grow-up and not just her as a child at the end of volume 1 and a young woman in this one. Of course, it's always possible to go back in time and fill in some of that story, and I hope they do at some point.

The Way Out focuses more on Pearl Jones and her husband, Henry, as they continue to try to stay off the radar of the old world vampires and the world at large - but an old enemy is on the hunt... and on their trail. (Duh duh DUH!)

I enjoyed this part of the volume much more, and would easily give it 4 stars.

The artwork continues to be strong, and I liked the change of artwork in Devil in the Sand for the flashback sequences. (And, I have to admit, I didn't see that twist coming in DitS.)

Not as riveting as the first volume, but a decent continuation of the series.

Skinner Sweet. Pearl Jones. New kinds of vampires. American vampires.

If you like volume 1, you'll like volume 2.

Vol. 2 was in some ways better, yet in some ways worse than the first compilation of this series.

On the positive, the characters that were introduced in volume one were now more developed, more interesting, and had better interactions with each other. Also, the different breeds of vampires were introduced better in this volume. Carpathian, Gaelic, American... the variations are made more clear and it makes for a richer world to base stories in.

The negative was that the split storytelling between the Skinner and Pearl story lines that were well woven together in the first volume were more fractured and separate.

It's Hollywood Vampires going to Sin City--Las Vegas. Only, what happens when Pearl and Skinner get there is no walk in the park. The vampires in Las Vegas are VERY different.

Did not see that twist coming! Loved revisiting Pearl and Henry, excited to see where we will find them next.
