I am so sad. This story felt way too real.

“The true nature of hatred. It is contagious.”

Maybe when I am ready, I will write a full review of this book. Until then, that is all I can say.

I so rarely cry to books, but this one had me sobbing. It was so painful. A real difficult read about how cruel people can really be.

Brutal

This is an unflinching tale about bullying (extreme) by one of my favorite authors. I thought Henry Bowers was bad, until I read this.

Again a great heartbreaking sad story from James Newman. A must read for all in this time because of the subject matter. It was written powerful and makes you think about what hatred can do. This could happen every day of the year. Same as peer pressure, that is becoming more and more a headline in the newspaper.

I will not lie, this book was difficult to get through. The author forces the reader to be apart of something so disturbing that I actually recoiled at some parts. That, I believe, is the point of this book. It is meant for you to be disgusted by the last page, and to make you question your own morals and ability to stick up for victims of bullying; and it makes men, in particular, question the level of toxic masculinity that has influenced our own lives. Also, what made this book difficult to get through is that this story, while fictional (I think), the level of violence and bullying depicted has happened to people in real life, and continues to happen, sadly.

Overall, I was able to read the book in one sitting, and could not put it down, though I literally had to pause and gather myself a few times. This book should definitely be required reading.

The prose left a little something to be desired, and the plot was a bit trite, but it sends an important message on the power of hate to destroy and consume, and how anyone is susceptible to prejudice, even, or perhaps even especially, children.

I listened to this story thinking that nothing like this would ever happen. That people, even teenagers, would never go this far. It was too “Lord of the Flies”. Somebody would put an end to it before it go so out of control. Hatred makes me sad.

4/5 - Not an easy read, I'm sure many of us can relate to this in some way.

I'm not American, and I'm not a guy, but I am around the same age as the characters in this book. And unfortunately I can relate to the book in a small way. Yeah, it's more extreme than all of us can relate to (I hope anyway) but the message that it portrays is the same.

I was bullied at school and it still affects me every day. It's contributed greatly to who I am. And kids are awful when they are bullies. As adults we tend to know when it's going to far, and when to just think things instead of saying it. Kids don't.

I read the book in one sitting. Although I knew it wasn't going to end well, I still had to read and hope something good would come of it.

The writing was great and I thought it was funny how I just couldn't remember the names of the characters, and had to recognise them from their clothes. That's not a put down for the book. In a way it makes it more "80's" for me as I can never remember anyone's names from the 80's horror films either. Whenever my partner and I talk about a Friday 13th film, for example, I always describe the characters by their clothes.

It's a great story to bring out discussions with people. I would definitely recommend reading it and it's a really good choice for a book club. You'll get some great conversations out of it.
