Clementine by Tillie Walden is a graphic novel spin off of The Walking Dead, which I’ve never watched. It follows a 17-year-old girl named Clementine as she travels with other young people, all trying to survive through a zombie apocalypse that’s been going on for almost ten years at that point. They deal with issues of trust, betrayal, and sacrifice. Without having the background from the series, I think I was a little lost, but obviously I was still rooting for the kids. All of the art is black, white, and gray. I found it difficult at times to see exactly what was happening. Is that a zombie? Dirt? Snow? Shadow? While I generally enjoyed it, I’m not super invested. I’ll get the next two books because I want them all for my classroom, though.
I only played, like, the beginning of the game Clementine is from, but I think fans of the game could appreciate this continuation of her story. There are a few callbacks to different characters, and I don’t think my ignorance of those characters necessarily took away from this story, but I’m sure it would have helped me understand her a little more. That said, I loved the character development in this story, and Ricca’s my fave.
EDIT: After perusing some other reviews, I might have been wrong about fans of the game liking this one.. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This is too bleak to hold my interest and I’m finding Clementine annoying
Even as someone who would not usually be excited by the idea of a zombie apocalypse book, I was enchanted by this story. Very well done.

Can’t really see how this is a continuation of the final season, but maybe it’s more like a reimagination? I love Walden’s writing and art, always have. The only thing I didn’t enjoy was the pitfall of ALL The Walking Dead properties: everything slways goes to shit and the status quo is upended. Then again, without it, the story wouldn’t continue, right? I just want Clem to rest, that’s all.
