Another novel that was fast and fun to read, but it never quite got above the level of interesting character studies. The story was quick to get the broken-down carnival in possession of its newest attraction (a young woman bought off of a gross man in some desert city) and taking said attraction on a tour of a semi-mythical seven cities in search of fame and fortune, but did it really go anywhere? Really?

No...but that was OK, this was a book to hook me in while I was stuck at the laundry mat and built enough steam to keep me reading it later that evening. Literary entertainment, like a two-parter on PBS or the BBC, it didn't need to really accomplish anything, it passed the time and used some cool words and phrases.
