I was spoiled at first by the comparisons to To Kill a Mockingbird. This is not that! But after getting over that, I found the book enjoyable. I like the device of the innocent narrator who saw and heard more than any boy his age should have. I read it for a book group discussion, but may have picked it up on my own anyway. A good read!
A great stripped-down story of murder and growing up in Depression-era Texas. Especially good if you like Robert McCammon or Ray Bradbury. I'm eager for more of this guy's books.
Schweren Herzens nur drei, denn eigentlich war es ein schönes Buch. Leider ist das Hautfarbenthema mit dem sehr dicken Pinsel aufgetragen und der Plot etwas vorhersehbar, speziell wenn man ein anderes, recht bekanntes Buch über eine ähnliche Zeit und Gegend gelesen hat, das ich hier aus Spoilergründen nicht nenne.
The plot sounded right up my alley, but I was too sensitive for the dark topics. I ended up not finishing it.

Definitely a slow burn, but worth it to stick with. Beautifully written.

As I began reading The Bottoms, I didn't expect to be confronted with such a violent and repugnant series of crimes in this incredible novel. And, interestingly, the story is told from the perspective of an old man, now in his 80s, reflecting back upon the occurrences of his childhood at age twelve. So you have this absolutely evil series of crimes, by both a mysterious murderous psychopath, and by the evil of The Klan, being described through the eyes of an innocent child. The juxtaposition makes for a very engaging story indeed! A definite 'recommend'!
