I found it to be pretty interesting but at the same time I felt the pacing was slow and I wish there was a little more to the story.

I really liked how it tackled the grey area surrounding how Germans dealt with the war. The ambiguity and understanding the parent's actions- top tier. Not top tier? The romance. The somewhat split loyalties in that aspect of the plot – not for me. Especially since some toed into infidelity. Amd, the ending, the last couple of pages, I was kind of ???? In sum, Loved Minna. Greta grew on me. Renata deserved better, but boy, was she charming. (Also, she should have been given more attention. Rudolph, how'd he come in, you know?) Am I glad I read this? Yes. Would I recommend this? With reservations.

I thought I had reviewed this one, but alas. I remember being frustrated by some of the characters, but I still like it.

i feel like as a queer person in germany i was the exact target audience for this, maybe a bit too old but still i loved this book and understood all references perfectly while still learning a few new things about "my" country's history. the ending was tragic and emotional and i loved the complexity of all the relationships however the main characters unfortunately did not speak to me that much and they're not my favourite ones i've read about in books. anyway all i could think about was that this book could easily have a sequel with the course that german history took on after wwii. and i would eat that sequel right up, i love queer historical fiction genuinely my favourite genre!! also i rly loved the leitmotif of heine's poem, so beautiful.
