It really took me a long time to read. It is beautifully written, but it is written like "short memoirs" and I got lost in the details a lot.
It is a good book. It has a lot of information you can learn from. But the writing style... is just not for me :(

I really struggled to read this not because it was written poorly, but because so many deep wounds Ocean described as a Vietnamese American were so real. His experience growing up in a family with deeply scarred people, with both physical and emotional abuse, with so much confusion and dealing with truths and hard realities that a child shouldn't have to face. It was a deeply powerful and transcendent read. The prose is beautiful, the poetry is poignant. The grief is palpable. It was a difficult book but an important read.

I gave up around 50% of the way in. It was too graphic, too emotional, too one-note. At first, I took on too much of the character's emotion for myself and I thought I could continue but in smaller chunks of time spent reading, but when I went back to the book I found I just really didn't want to listen anymore. It felt like it was all the same emotional story over and over but with different people. I was tired and frustrated by his relationship with Trevor. I can see why the author chose to make a more in depth study of that relationship but I just wanted to move ON... I might still pick it back up but mostly I feel done with the book, even though I didn't "finish" it. I'm finished with it.

Language was beautiful, poetic - as expected - and made for some good quotes. Made a stark contrast to the graphic nature of much of the content.
