Definitely an easier read than Evelina but also less enjoyable

Read for my 19th Century American Literature Class.

Oh look, a historical novel that won't get a rating because it's a historical novel! Could never be Passing.

This book was fine, from a purely technical point of view, although it was highly repetitive and could certainly be half the length. It offered an interesting window onto the operation of 18-cent. female friendships---even dramatized, even moralized.

The Coquette by Hannah Webster Foster - I read this for the first time in college, and I loved it! The reread was still good even though I was denied Dr. Templeton's company! Happy Reading!

SPOILERS AHEAD

An absolute perfect short book based on true events worthy of a podcast! I just wish, for posterity's sake, the value on naming the dated "coquetry" in modern reviews could come around to "self awareness" or "honor" than lingering within rigid, patriarchal 1800s rhetoric.

Because I could very easily see how this could happen in this current time of August 2022, the proof of wanting to enjoy singlehood to staying true to yourself but knowing your friends can only carry you so far to a piece of shit guy getting a girl pregnant and realizing too late that he was actually in love with her the whole time. Human behavior rarely changes but in the way writers process it in their contemporary language.

For being published around 230 years ago, this book had so many salient moments of modern life, including some moments that made me giggle. GIGGLING? At a book published in the 1700’s? Remarkable.

read for class. really not a fun read. early american novels didn't have it figured out

This story of a woman's fall from grace, told through letters, was one of the few books that I was forced to read for American Literature that I enjoyed.

Although it seems different from any other book I've ever read currently, I found the storyline to be more interesting and engaging. How she continues to ignore advice from friends and family, how she puts herself in dangerous situation (dangerous to her reputation anyway), and how she does everythign she is not meant to do and the consequences of her actions. It is a well written story about the dangers of premarital sex, unladylike behavior, and of men.

While at first is seems hard to get into, eventually I couldn't put it down and had to know what was going to happen to these characters.

Overall, I liked it.
