Read the first half for class, and wasn't interested in the characters enough to finish it on my own time...
Had to read this book for my Women Writers class for my Senior Year of college. And it was a hard one to get through. It took a solid twenty pages to get into the novel and understand who would be writing to who without having to flip to the end of the letter to find out who the author was. I had a major problem with the 'main character' Eliza who grew more and more frustrating and annoying. I only felt sorry for her towards the end after she slept with Sanford. But even then I was still annoyed with her for doing this herself. Everyone around her tells her the advice she's seeking but doesn't take any of it and regrets nothing until both her interests of Boyer and Sanford are out of her reach. Only Boyer is truely forgotten once he tells her off, but since Sanford actively seeks her even after marriage it's her own fault she still goes along with it. The ending wasn't satisfying and would've been a bit better had the baby actually survived or we saw the forshadowed downfall of Sanford.

Never before have I heard the words "rake" and "libertine" used so many times. Poor Eliza.
Probably best epistolary novel I’ve read that was written before the 20th century lol. The drama the tea the messageeee, had me flipping pages like I never expected. Tragic ending, but at least we get some poetic justice
Not sure I genuinely liked a single character in this, but definitely an intriguing read
