   I really loved the slow burn romance in this novel! It maybe should not have that high of a score but I continually kept swooning and giggling and kicking my feet whenever Jamie something romantic so I had a lot of fun reading this. 
    However, I felt like the first 100ish pages should have been edited down a bit because the plot kinda dragged there and didn’t really fully begin until like past page 120. I just didn’t need that much focus on Dan when the story was supposed to be about Laurie and Jamie falling in love. It made the first quarter of the book feel like a contemporary on divorce and marriage instead of love and romance. Also, I’m not a huge fan of the way that McFarlane used SO much British slang and also text speech out loud when characters were talking, like the “lol” that they would constantly somehow say irl. Maybe this style would have worked better for an audiobook but I felt it did not translate well to written prose.

This was such a nice surprise. I picked this up on a whim and I loved it. It took a while to get into the book as the first 100 pages are about Laurie's relationship breakdown, but once Laurie and Jaimie get stuck in the lift the pace picks up a lot. Laurie was such a loveable character, she was flawed, but she was also a strong independent women which I loved. Your definitely not meant to like Jaimie at the beginning but by the end it's hard not to love him. I loved the inclusion of a strong group of supportive friends, and also how the microaggressions where dealt  with in relation to Laurie being black.

I don't normally read these types of books but when I do I always think, why don't I? I clearly enjoy them despite predictability, as one enjoys a chick flick ever so often. Especially with one that offers much more depth, such as this. I'll be looking into more of McFarlane's novels in the future.

This book was written in a charming way. I typically hate the third act conflict in romance novels since you always know they're going to end up together in the end, but I actually thought it was well-done here. I also thought it was a good choice to just focus on one protagonist's perspective. The book was predictable, but in a comforting way.
