Caitlin McIntyre can not believe her eyes or her ears. Her best friend, Kyle Lockhart has just proposed to her. Too bad, it is not for real. Kyle is practicing on Caitlin for when he proposes to his girlfriend, Monica. Caitlin will have to try really hard to put on a happy face. Especially since she has been asked to help Kyle plan the perfect proposal. Will Caitlin speak up before it is too late?

Ask Her at Christmas by Christi Barth is part of an anthology titled, Romancing the Holiday. Although this story can be read separately. I am not usually a fan of holiday stories but I thought this book was a good one. It had the feel of a good Christmas story. Also, I felt the chemistry between Caitlin and Kyle. However, I do have to say that Kyle was just like a typical guy and dense in the head. It took him a long time to figure out that Caitlin was the right woman for him. Luckily he did discover it just in the nick of time. How Kyle was able to last with Monica for as long as he did at six months is beyond me. Monica was a hateful woman. I wanted to wring her neck. Of course, I also felt like Caitlin should have stood up to Monica. Although I could forgive Caitlin for not being as strong as she was so nice. Ask Her at Christmas is an ideal stocking stocker for the holidays. It will keep you warm.

Ask Her at Christmas by Christi Barth
Caitlin McIntyre has a massive crush on her longtime best friend in the whole world: Kyle Lockhart. Did he know how she felt when he was
down on one knee proposing to her? Problem is he was doing a test run to ask his girlfriend Monica.
She agrees to help him. first is the theme of Christmas. Lighting, music, bride to be the center of attention with others circling her on the ice rink.
Then he explains why his father wants him to marry soon-for the good of the company finances...
With his dads chemo and radiation for lung cancer he might be around a bit longer now but he doesn't want to disappoint him again. He's always felt like a failure.
Along with his theme he wants to use the store windows that are dresses for the season as his backdrop, going all the way around the store to the end where the prince is down on one knee..
When Caitlin has lunch with Monica she realizes she does not care about the holiday, only from the business side of things.
Monica has it all worked out, a way to keep Caitlin out of the way. Now it's her decision to make.

Why, oh why did the "other woman" have to be such a bitch? It added more drama then could reasonably be handled in a short story, and besides, it is so cliché.

The story started out well enough, with likable heroes and an appropriate amount of Christmas, but then the reveal happened, and the story never recovered from the direction it took then. Oh, well.

A sweet Christmas story with good writing and lovable characters.

I wanted more from this story. Part of what I love about Barth is the tension she builds between her characters, and I felt that was missing. I wanted more of them fighting their attraction, maybe even more stolen moments. But we didn't get it except in the characters thoughts and one kiss before everything was wrapped up. There was still enough chemistry to make it a pleasant read, but it wasn't as satisfying as Barth's books usually are for me.

I was excited to read this ARC because it sounded perfect for a sweet Christmas read. What better setting than the holidays for a friends-to-lovers romance? I enjoyed reading about Caitlin and Kyle. They had been friends since they were children, but Caitlin had wanted more for years. Kyle had been more oblivious about his feelings - as men in these stories are wont to be - but had always fought attraction to Caitlin. Not wanting to ruin their friendship, neither Kyle or Caitlin had said anything to the other.

Because I am the kind of person who can never get too much build-up, my usual complaint about novellas is that there is not enough time for the relationship to develop. However, this story was actually a perfect fit for the length of a novella. To make it longer would be pointlessly dragging things out for no reason. Caitlin and Kyle had been best friends for years, and that was clear as soon as the story started. Their relationship developed at a good pace, and I liked the way it unfolded.

Unfortunately, there was not much characterization beyond the surface. But I liked Caitlin and her perpetual happiness, and there was Kyle, a total nerd who also happened to have movie star looks. Who doesn't love that? Monica, Kyle's would-be fiancée was an obviously boring and horrid woman despite her Marilyn Monroe appearance. She was clearly not going to present any threat to the couple.

This was a nice little Christmas romance. Nothing too serious or dark happened, and there was not much standing in the way of the HEA. It made me giggle several times and had quite a few good lines. If you're looking for a quick, cute friends-to-lovers romance in a Christmas setting - or a variety of potential ways to propose if you live in the Chicago area - Ask Her at Christmas is a good choice.
