character based books always fall flat at the end, however i really liked this book

Delicate, brutal, heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time, I appreciated these women’s friendships more than anything else in the story, which I kind of feel is the point. I could identify with all the main women characters in one way or another, even if - from an outsider’s viewpoint - I could shake my head at some of their decisions. There were a few plotlines I would have liked tied up a little more neatly, but I also know life isn’t like that.

Knocking off one star because having ALL the male characters be completely horrible in their own ways felt unrealistic in a way the rest of the book didn’t.

An account of the challenges of being young woman in contemporary Seoul that acts as an insight into the obsession with beauty standards in South Korea and its class ridden culture, and yet I never found myself drawn in by the plot or the characters and so was left unsatisfied.

Stunning.

Oh perfect I loved I need to read it again immediately to process

haunting, nearly-dystopian look into the importance of beauty in South Korea. Some of the characters’ storylines fell a bit flat at the end but overall it was a fascinating read!

This book doesn't have a plot in the strictest sense of the word; instead, it's a look into the lives of the characters, their backgrounds, their place in society, their views, struggles, and general experiences within a society that focuses on appearance and status. Each character was very well developed and unique from one another. I felt like I could really get into each of their shoes and have some kind of understanding of what it was like to be them, which can be a difficult thing for an author to achieve. Because the book doesn't necessarily have a main plot, it does end without a real sense of conclusion for any of the characters, but this did not bother me because of how well it was written.
