Nothing will be as good as The Bees, so I might have rated this more highly from another author.

I have tried to read this book twice and I really wanted to like it as I love The Bees by the same author. I struggled to get into the story and the characters. I might try again one day though!

This was a riveting read!
I thoroughly enjoyed the way the book was structured. The events in the books present were interspersed with trips back in time to weave in relevant past.
The language and style of the writing was also a pleasure.
The background research was clearly extensive. The pattern of introducing each chapter with an extract drawn from historical accounts of the Arctic experience worked very well.
It is described as an eco-chiller/thriller and the conclusion justifies that label even though the majority of the book is gripping in a different way.
Strongly recommended.

A mix of environmental issues and plenty of mystery, The Ice by Laline Paull follows the story of the death of Tom, a well-known environmentalist after his dead body was discovered in the Arctic.

The first chapter hooked me well when the rich passengers of a big cruise went to the Arctic for a polar bear sighting and due to global warming, most of the ice in the Arctic melted, thus, the revelation of Tom's dead body.

Sean, Tom's best friend was the last person to see him alive 3 years ago. Slowly, corruption because of dirty politics was revealed one by one. Both of Tom and Sean fond of the Arctic but with different missions; one who want to preserve the Arctic and the animals around there due to global warming and one who believes they can do business by exploring the Ice.

'Look at the world- a great big band of drought of flood that just happens to coincide with mineral resources, with political instability and then with foreign intervention by the very powers that benefit from the extractive rights.'

I love how the author describes how one move from the bad wealth guy can make a disaster to the world and its inhabitants especially in the Arctic. Obviously, the author had done her research well again in The Ice.

Wasn't getting on with the protagonist, everything felt like it was moving a bit slowly

Came thinking it was a story about a dystopian future, realised it is not, stayed anyway. I’m sure it’s a great book to some, just not really the kind to appeal to me.
Characters feel somewhat flat and just not that engaging.
