I honestly canā€™t decide if I like this one or not. I love a good Peter Pan retelling. And I like Hook being the good guy. I even like that Tinker Bellā€˜s isnt a bitch in this one. Iā€™ll keep reading the series and maybe see how I feel at the conclusion.

This book is incredibly easy to dive into, offering a delightful retelling of the classic story. Following the adventures of Hook and Tink, the dynamic between them evolves from enemies to lovers, with Hook becoming almost obsessed with Tink. Her playful nature never fails to bring laughter. Tink's banishment from Neverland stems from her illicit sale of pixie dust. As Hook is cursed from the sea after the theft by Tink, they must now work together to achieve their individual goals, ultimately leading them to the mysterious Mermaid Queen. The fast-paced narrative keeps readers engaged as they follow the characters on their quest.

This is certainly one of the most creative, interesting and detailed retellings Iā€™ve read in a long time! In many ways Peter Pan is well-trodden territory, but Megan van Dyke does an excellent job of flipping what we know on its head, and using the building blocks of the original story to create something new.

I loved all the twists on the original story; the way pixie dust was used, the dynamics between the different pirates, and the world of Neverland in general. It was a full fantasy adventure! Iā€™m tempted to compare it to Once Upon A Time, and I think it will appeal to fans of the show, but safe to say the plot was a lot more coherent and less convoluted than OUAT! There was just the right amount of plot twists and unexpected reveals, enough to keep you on your toes but not too many that you felt like you didnā€™t know where you stood within the story.

I have to say though, I didnā€™t enjoy the romance quite as much. Again I had to repeatedly remind myself to picture Hook from OUAT rather than from the Disney film, otherwise it weirded me out too much. It took me out of the otherwise very immersive storytelling a little bit, and by the end I still wasnā€™t entirely convinced.

Overall though, it was a really fun, gripping adventure, that brought a new dark and twisted side to Neverland.

I received a free copy for an honest review.

Cute Peter Pan retelling. It ends with unanswered questions (the possibility of a second book maybe).

SECOND STAR TO THE LEFT was a great Peter Pan retelling featuring a charming Captain Hook and feisty Tinker Bell. I loved their banter and the way they tried to resist each other but couldn't. The story was fast paced and easy to read and I was pulled into this version of Neverland right away.

Hook was definitely portrayed as more of a gentleman pirate and he had me swooning from the beginning. He was surprisingly honorable, loyal to his crew who were more like family, and an absolute charmer who gave off great Captain Jack Sparrow vibes. As for Tink, she was determined, compassionate, and full of fire. She never hesitated to speak her mind and go toe-to-toe with Hook. Together they had so much chemistry and steam and I loved watching them fall for each other.

The side characters were all a delight, especially cinnamon roll Smee and the badass Captain Cressida and her ship of all female pirates. I'm really looking forward to reading more in this series and seeing what Megan Van Dyke does with some other fairy tales.
