YOU NEED TO READ!! This is an absolute must read of all time funny but so real hits the emotions of living with a disability right on. I haven’t read his first book yet but I just ordered it yesterday and I can’t wait to read it. I know I know I’m reading them out of order but who knew I would like this one so much

This is a very funny book by a young man who has learned to poke fun at his circumstances (although he's a successful writer and businessman;has a gorgeous girlfriend and is very much in love so he's pretty much got what everyone in this world wants) which are that he was born with SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy) a disease which is progressive and will eventually rob the sufferer of their life whilst making it progressively difficult to enjoy the things most of us take for granted (like being able to hold our own head up or eat something chewier than soup).

Shane's second book (and I'm sure I'll read the first) has so much hope in it that it leaves you a bit breathless. The main hope comes in the form of Spinraza which, if it works for Shane, will stop his SMA in its tracks and may even reverse some effects of the muscle wasting.

In the meantime he's getting on with things. I have to say having read this I'm not sure I'd ever let Shane and his brother ever go on another road trip. Shane says his brother is a pantser (it'll be okay, let's just go) but I think they both have a large amount of irresponsibility in them - nearly freezing to death then getting stuck in a sand dune being two of the more insane capers.

Just read the book. Its worrying, funny, uplifting, sobering and thankfully not too much nudity/farting/drug-induced insanity (but there is some!)

4.5 stars! As someone who has a type of MD similar to Shane’s (slower progressing), I love to read his books and watch his YouTube channel to have a role model to look up to. It’s so cool how Shane and Hannah work to normalize interabled relationships and also show that people with disabilities can live full and happy lives. The only thing holding me back from 5 stars would be the slightly choppy writing as I felt some stories could have been more detailed. However, I would recommend this book or “Laughing at My Nightmare” to anyone and everyone!

I am a woman living a wonderful life with muscular dystrophy..

I loved the way Shane differentiates coping with humor and using humor as a wall. I feel the difference when I’m healthy vs. struggling. I also appreciate the way he puts into words the wanting to do all I can while I can as we we live with the constant weakening it’s hard to balance. Lastly, I believe the bedroom is more intimate as it requires more vulnerability and communication and I appreciate how he communicated that as well! Hahaha Shane is the best!

Fave quote:
“People were overwhelmingly content to support her decision simply because living a worthwhile life and living with a disability are not compatible ideas for a disturbing portion of the general population.” (About a teenage girl with SMA committing suicide..)
