“There's a specific kind of grief that comes with losing someone you love, the kind that is always skimming just under the surface; the kind so universal that you can't help recognizing it in someone else, even if you don't know what you're seeing yet.”

😭😭😭😭 brb sobbing

this book has a lot of genuine charm to it. the characters are all a little silly and broken in their own ways, but they also all fit together like pieces in a puzzle. andie and milo UGH I LOVE THEM!!!! I love that the focus wasn’t just on them, but also on Andie navigating her grief that still feels fresh after years have passed and figuring out her place in a world she made to be her mom’s. just a beautiful story I could read again and again and again!!!!

It's… probably not good that in the month since I've read this, I've forgotten almost everything about it. Probably cute? And a well-thought-out storyline? I do know that I'll continue reading Emma Lord's fiction, YA or not, and that's a pretty good sign.

I really appreciated the balance of lighthearted-ness and deeper, meaningful conversation in this book. I think the grief element was done beautifully and appropriately for a YA book. The romance was very cute as well!

I may need a little more time to figure out why this book wasn't quite a 4 for me.

The story was cute and I liked the characters. I felt Andie had some great personal growth. I loved seeing the representation of bi/lesbian characters. I had suspicions what the major conflict would be pretty early on. The romance was somewhat slow (maybe I've been reading too much adult romance/ smut). But it was otherwise a cozy quick read.

I think my biggest annoyance was Andie's need to literally try and fix everyone's problems. Also her weird aversion to curse words, replacing them with food items. It wasn't cute... just annoying to me. Especially since shit and fuck were both used elsewhere. Also Andie was basically raised by snarky grannies who I promise swore.

Another sweet read from Emma Lord, set at a fictional version of UVA. I loved the found family elements, though I found the main character (Andie) a bit frustrating, and some of the conflict was contrived (though I guess realistic for 18-year-olds).

This was my favorite book by Emma Lord yet! Something about this story truly touched my heart so deeply, and I know that if I had been able to read this as a college freshman it would’ve hit me even harder. She absolutely nailed what this stage of life is like—that tumultuous time when you’re just starting to figure out who you are as an adult and feeling all the growing pains that comes with all that self discovery. And, as always, the romance was so sweet and heartwarming, complete with a grump/sunshine trope that I always seem to live for. Can’t recommend this book enough, especially if you’re looking for upper-YA/New Adult vibes and, of course, plenty of tasty food references on every page.
