Much of the writing in this book could have been better, I think, but the mystery was strong and the characters were interesting. As a Native woman, I was delighted to read a story full of strong Native characters, and the ending was so incredibly sad, I didn’t expect to be that upset about it.

I had some doubt about this book as I'm always wary of chancing the author.
I was wrong. I started to read it around 10 pm and was not able to put it down till 2 am.
It's great book that you cannot put it down. I loved to meet again the old characters and welcome some new.
The plot kept hooked and this is definetly a page turner.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to HarperCollins and Edelweiss for this ARC

So far, I'm very happy with how Anne Hillerman is continuing this series. It's very much in the same vein as when her father wrote them, keeping all the things that made me love them, but she's also brought something of her own into the mix. I love how it's not just a "Leaphorn and Chee" series now, but "Leaphorn, Chee and Manuelito". Well done, Anne, and please continue!

Cave of Bones by Anne Hillerman is the 22nd of the Navajo mysteries, and her fourth one. This one has Jim Chee and Bernadette Manuelito working on separate missing persons cases.

Bernie's case involves a missing camp counselor who has failed to return after bringing back a girl who had wandered away from her campsite during an overnight solo. Chee meanwhile is looking for a man who was last seen doing landscaping jobs but hasn't returned now that it's the winter season.

Jim Leaphorn, meanwhile, is recovered enough now to be able to do the research Bernie and Chee need while working out in the field. While it's nice to see him doing better, if this series continues, Leaphorn will eventually need to die to keep any sense of realism. Or Hillerman will just have to decide that the characters are living in the "now now" like Elizabeth Peters did with her Vicky Bliss series.

Another good tale from Tony Hillerman's daughter. It was especially fun, because some of it is set in Santa Fe. She manages a complex set of plot lines with ease and keeps her characters interesting.

Chee and Bernie each have their own problems. What we see is good police work that brings the story to a conclusion. Each has their own personal issues to deal with as well. Set is the Four Corners area, during the Winter - the story presents a different look at the desert landscape.

2.5. This just left me sort of meh. I really like this genre on TV but I usually have trouble with it in book form.

I thought the book was really interesting, although there were a lot of different plot lines to keep track of. I listened to the audiobook and wasn’t a fan of the narrator’s other voices-I think I would have liked the book a lot more if I had just read it!

Audiobook. I don't know how many times I've driven past the Malpais but next time I do I'm stopping. Interesting story and plot, love this series continuation.
