I didn't like this one as much as the other books. It is very similar to the plot of the second book.
Riley and Sloan have a terrible relationship, so when Sloan asks Riley to visit her, she is apprehensive. I hated the way Sloan treated Riley in the beginning, she was very rude and condescending towards her. Riley is quiet and introverted, while Sloan is the the opposite. They don't understand each other and have a hard time relating to one another. I liked Riley's development throughout the book. She became stronger, more confident, and starts to stand up for herself.
Mal is a ghost. He can get in anywhere without being detected. When he sees Riley he wants to save her, this begins his obsession. After taking her, we start to see his softer side as he nurses her back to health, takes care of her, and protected her. I didn't like him as much as Declan or even Kage. Yes, he was kind and sweet in his own way, but he will still very cold.
I just didn't feel as invested in their relationship. I was also really missing the witty and funny banter from the last two books.
I like that we get glimpses of the other couples. I was disappointed in the development of Sloan and Spider. I really liked them both in the 2nd book, but the both took a down turn in this one.
Tropes: Mafia, kidnapped FMC, protective alpha MMC, enemies to lovers, age gap, open door

I honestly didnāt think I could enjoy another one more than the second book but my God do I love Riley and Mal! Their banter is even on par with Declan and Sloane in my opinion. But I like the dynamics between these two even more. The hurt/comfort, the tender caretaker ugh I canāt get enough.
My one gripe is that I wish we got more of a bratty side from Riley to contrast Mals need to choke her hahahaha

Like I was the biggest Sloane fan since book 1, but she suddenly had this personality transplant in this book which made me not just annoyed at her bitchiness, but also taken aback by her mood swings? Idk sheās just not the Sloane I knew and it felt like her character suffered for the āplotā, and I finally heaved a sigh of relief at the end when I felt the old Sloane coming back. Already, Riley felt like the sister that never was supposed to exist until this book became a thing. Again, plot. At least sheās hilarious and as iconic as Sloane was. Until she also goes off the rails a little. And Mal the merc is rather dumb for a lot of the book and I wasnāt enamored by him like I have been so far by the men in the series. Then he goes and does swoony things so idk what my problem is. Iām gonna come right out and say it, I just didnāt care much about their romance.
Is it just me and my not so great relationship with mafia romance? Am I just finding fault? I have a feeling that somethingās missing but not sure exactly what. Thereās also another personality transplant by the end for a character I had liked so far, but weāll see how that pans out. I say all this, but Iād still rather read these books over almost any other mafia romance out there. Because see: funny and hot and at times also super swoony, and heroines that donāt make me want to stab something and send them back to school. Iām just overthinking the missing pieces. If my review seems scattered, itās because thatās basically how I feel about this book.
