Review Taken From The Pewter Wolf

I always thought I was a Beatrix Potter fan. I loved Peter Rabbit, Benjamin Bunny, Jemima Puddle-Duck, Tom Kitten. I always thought that Mrs Tiggy-Winkle and Mr Jeremy Fisher would make the perfect couple (I have no idea why!). And my favourite tale by Beatrix Potter is The Tailor of Gloucester. So, when I heard that Emma Thompson was writing a "further tale", I decided to do some research... and discovered that I haven't read even half of the Beatrix Potter collection. I never even heard of Mr Todd, before Emma Thompson mentioned him in an interview!

So, The Further Tale of Peter Rabbit. Peter Rabbit is in low spirits. He sneaks into Mr McGregor's garden to discover a picnic basket. Hiding inside for a sleep, he wakes up to discover that he's in Scotland and is face to face with a giant black bunny, Finlay McBurney...

Now, this must be a daunting challenge for both Emma Thompson and the illustrator, Eleanor Taylor. To write and draw a new story and, at the same time, capture the spirit and essence of Beatrix Potter. And, dare I say it, I think they both do it while, at the same time, being themselves.

I know some of you have told me that the story, in your opinion, has a slight politic edge, but I didn't see it. It must have been blindsighted by the illustrations, which are pretty.

But I really like this. I think this will fit the Beatrix Potter stories really well and with Emma Thompson being asked to write a further two tales (thanks theBookseller.com for the heads-up), I'm sure young fans of the book will love this and the further tails... sorry, tales.

I can't believe I missed adding this here. It was such an adorable read, and felt very much in the vein of the original stories. Scottish McBunneh was amazing and I want him -cuddles-

Normally if I see a redux of a classic children's book (or film) held dear to my heart, I tend to freak out like HOW DARE YOU?!? But...this...is so sweet!??!

The illustrations are cozy and evoke the same sort of nostalgia without being awful or carbon copies of the original. Emma Thompson did an amazing job too. I should've known her writing would be excellent after reading her diary of Sense and Sensibility, but it was still such a pleasant surprise.

These will make excellent gifts for my nieces and to be honest, for me as well.

Obviously this only took me Two Seconds to read, but those Two Seconds were a pure delight. I bought this for Mother's Day and as a fanatic of both Emma Thompson and Beatrix Potter (and Scotland), I know Mum will love it.

I have a definite fondness for Potter's Peter Rabbit so that's probably most of it. The drawing and story are perfectly done for Beatrix Potter fans- cozy, comforting, pastoral sweetness. Thompson did a great job of keeping the tone of the original books in her language, while gently updating the feel just the right amount. It's a bit long and has some challenging words so would make a good one-on-one read aloud.

This book is just as good as the classic! The tale of Peter Rabbit is very cute and fun to read to kids. This book takes Peter Rabbit beyond the Mr. McGregor's garden and he goes on many new adventures! Really cute story!

Children are unlikely to be bothered by the differences between Potter’s style and her modern successors, but adult fans may not find all they are hoping for here. read more

I was nervous when I heard there would be a new Peter Rabbit book, but Emma Thompson captures the essence of the original tales perfectly. It's a fun, delightful tale that fits Peter wonderfully and I really enjoyed it. It has a sly sense of humor. The illustrations are beautiful and look just like the original Peter Rabbit tales. A very nice addition to any collection.
