More like a 3.5
When I started reading Malice I did not expect it to be a science fiction thriller. There's so much manipulation, mystery, and danger. Sure the world hangs in the balance, but I found myself questioning everything - and with good reason! It's a story about love, siblings, and the influence of our actions. Does one person's life always outweigh the good of many? The lives of many over the few? Malice examines us how one action can change the future. Each of those minute decisions, big and small.
The mistakes we make at the face of innovation. What are the acceptable stakes and sacrifices when we don't know what is right and wrong? Malice also tackles the ghosts of Alice's mom leaving, the hole she left behind. How the relationships start to splinter. When the world is on fire and left in ruin, who is the culprit? What one action triggered the lines of dominoes? It's a story that will keep you guessing.

Malice is a young adult time traveling science fiction story by Pintip Dunn. Malice was a fast paced story to try and save the world from a virus that if left unchecked would wipe out two/thirds of the world’s population. Pretty dire stakes, right? I think one of the best parts about Malice was the writing. This book immediately drew me in and captured my attention. I also loved the romance element, and even though I don’t read a ton of novels that feature time travel, I always do seem to be pretty interested in the how of it all. I love seeing how the author is going to work out the mechanics of time travel, and I think that Pintip Dunn did a great job, making the whole thing seem plausible.
I love that Malice is unlike most of the books I typically read about. It made the plot feel extra fresh, unique and exciting to me. A race to save the world from an unknown threat, voices in your head from the future. All of it felt very mysterious. In Malice we meet our main characters, Alice and Bandit. I loved Alice. I loved how close and protective she was of her brother, and I loved watching the bantering interactions between her and Bandit. Alice first hears a voice in her head at school, and the voice tells her to go over to popular boy, Bandit and profess her love for him. She reluctantly does it and it sets off a chain of events that lead her to her main quest. Bandit made me smile right from their first texting interaction. I was very interested in the romance element of the book. (I know, shocker!) Sometimes even more interested in the romance, than in the race to save the world.
I will say that I figured out who the person was almost immediately, but the plot had plenty of twists, turns and surprises to keep me really interested and invested in finding out how everything comes together. I really enjoyed the journey and ride that this book took me on. I could easily see this turning into a movie or TV series. The book wrapped up nicely, but I could totally see another book set in this world, with either these characters or new ones. If you are a fan of mysterious, fast paced novels with a high stakes adventure and great writing, then Malice is a book that you should definitely check out. I really enjoyed it!

A good thriller with sci-fi aspects that keep you guessing till the last page.
It's gripping and entertaining, with a cast of interesting characters and a well crafted plot that kept me hooked.
Even if I'm not a YA read I appreciated the storytelling and the story.
A good read, recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Edelweiss for this ARC, all opinions are mine.

I finished this a little late but I really enjoyed reading this with the Dragons and Tea Book Club! Full RTC!

Disclaimer: I received an ARC via Netgalley for the tour, this does not affect my opinion.
"One wrong move, one detail too many, and we could create ripples that will change the future in ways we never intended."
When I saw this book that had 59 chapters, I complained in my head, because I was reading another ARC with 53 chapters and those chapters are long. I kinda dedicated February in reading my library books, and ARC's which is fine. I would have gotten this post on the 8th if my dumbass didn't get sidetracked, commented that I never got the book sooner and my self being afraid of going back to school again.
I never realized this book was actually science-fiction. This book deals with a virus that wipes out 2/3 of the population, so older Alice task her younger self to go find the person who will eventually create the virus and stop him.
Doesn't that sound so entertaining? And it was. I was hooked instantly because there was this sense of mystery in this book. Those chapters just seem to go by quickly because I was entertained. It was such a cool concept and something I never seen before, but I did have issues with it.
The time-traveling aspect? I love time-traveling, it has always been one of my favorite concepts in shows/books, but this book not so much. I have so many questions about the time-traveling aspect of this book and I want to know more. If your future selves could visit past you, how do you do that really? What are the rules? Is there any after-effects that may take a toll on you? I have all these questions, but little to no answers to them.
I just really want to talk about the virus? Like wow. That stuff is messed up because it's savage. I feel like it could happen one day if someone understands UV light and all that, because that is one way to wipe off the human race if someone really wanted too. I'm not talking about me, because science and me doesn't get along.
The characters were iffy to me. I wasn't neutral about them, I liked them a little bit-but at times they acted annoyingly. Alice had the worst of it, because her character never made sense. It bounces back and forth, but there were a few moments where I really liked towards the end.
Bandit was one of my favorite characters. At first I hated because, all he said was that he was Thai in every single dialogue that got a little annoying, and acted like one of those YA brooding, dark boys with a past. Guess what, I was off and that there was a lot more to him than what meets the eye and I love him for that.
And the fact that he has blue hair? That stuff is cool, and I'd kill for blue hair from what I've imagined-but no happening. The last time I had blue hair-dye-it turned my hair green and I was being self-conscious so now my hair is red.

Writing a good time-travel book is difficult, too say the least--especially when the world allows the possibility of changing the past, thereby affecting the future. Pintip Dunn has done a great job of that here. The swirls and eddies of the timeline get so convoluted that it's hard to write a review without spoilers. I'll just say the person who must be stopped is not who you think, and the method to stop that person is also, well, not what you think. But it all hangs together, and it works. Worth reading!
This was such a fascinating and unique read. If you are looking for a book full of suspense and that has plenty of twists and turns than look no further. I really enjoyed the writing and characters. I thought they were both well written. This was a wonderful read and I can't wait to read book two!
