Felt I had to try this series and really pleased (at the age of 33!) that I finally have.

It doesn't matter that it's set in America, particularly. I'm sure cultural references aside, the experiences and feelings of little sister Ramona are universal - starting school, wanting to be liked, trying to understand new routines.

It's lovely. Lots of life lessons and entertaining stories, with sisterly relationships in there and a likeable young heroine who tries her best but is utterly human and fallible.

There's an element of Just William in it, but it's not quite as 'deep' and clever in its language but just as honest a child's voice, more accessible definitely.

One to find for 5/6 year olds starting school, on whatever country.

This was the first Ramona Quimby book I remember reading. I definitely have fond memories for Ramona learning "present" didn't necessarily mean gift, Beezus teasing Ramona about the "dawn's early light" from the Star Spangled Banner, and Ramona "quitting" school. I remember empathizing with Ramona's annoyance over how slow Howie and grown ups were (I often felt so much the same as a kid!).

As an adult reading this in the 2020s, it's painfully obvious Ramona has ADHD - can't focus on her own work, isn't able to relate well to her peers, can't sit still, very imaginative, incredibly impulsive. I also completely get why her peers do not like her (though I did not pick up that nuance as a kid when I read this book).

The "boing" noise she makes for Susan's curls is hilarious. And her Ramona voice is too precious.

I have always loved Ramona books. Ramona the Pest is a fun read and I would encourage all young readers to read these books.

It's never a good sign when you finish a book and your first thought is, "Thank goodness that's over with!" It's not that this book was bad. It wasn't. It just also wasn't good. None of the characters have anything even approaching a personality and the assorted scenes just aren't that engaging with the exception of Ramona forgetting her first tooth at school moments after dropping out. That one hit hard with my little one. She insists she enjoyed the book, but any time we sat down to read, she wanted to read pretty much anything but this. It just wasn't engaging in the slightest. I could swear I remember loving the Ramona books?
