I knew I would like this book, but I did not know that I would TOTALLY love it. All Ali Hazelwood novels are very 'chronically online's coded. And I love it. And there are SO many Henley's (and I didn't even have to Google what that is. This time).

It's grumpy susnhine...sort of? But maybe they are both kinda grumpy TBH. It's so sweet. And cute. And the chess bits are interesting. The characters all have depth, they communicate and it's great. And I like that it's fade to black....because it's a chess romance and IMO it does not require explicit sex scenes. There is interesting discussion about gender and chess. It is delightfully nerdy and conversationally written in Ali Hazelwood signature style. I wanted to see the ending play out a little more. I wanted MORE. and maybe that's really because I loved this and don't want it to end? I LOVED this. Huge movie potential.

Two quotes I was obsessed with.
"First rule of chess club, never Google yourself".
"when I'm with you, I want to play more than I want to win".

so this was my first Ali Hazelwood book ever and ngl I really enjoyed it

loved our main character Mallory, also loved her sisters they were great (as a person with sisters I could relate), the family dynamic as a whole was one of the highlights for me in this

Nolan was down bad from the moment they met, love me a man that falls for a woman's intellect

very sweet overall, did cry like twice (also made me wanna re-watch the queen's gambit)
funny hopeful informative lighthearted medium-paced

I think this is my favourite Ali Hazelwood so far!

I absolutely loved Mallory and Nolan, and live for some yearning. The opposite appearances making them match the white/black chess pieces was such a nice detail. We love a man who knows what he wants and is willing to work - and wait - for it. Nolan is dreamy and and swoon worthy and I’m obsessed!

Such an easy breezy read that I highly enjoyed! Even though I really wanted to see their entire World Championship play out, I really loved the ending (aka, last page and epilogue 😜)

Super fun fluffy read, although Nolan seems to me to have the most marble stone personality out of the now 3 Ali Hazelwood books I’ve read.
Could super relate to Mallory on way too many accounts, which was a bit anxiety inducing. But I think a YA is exactly the right place for her and I thoroughly enjoyed my time with this book 🥰
