I’m one of those people who has to finish what they started. If it wasn’t for that little trait, I definitely would’ve DNFed this book. Each chapter is copy of the first one with just a few details changed or a new nugget of information revealed. The whole I hate him, but I love him. He’s a monster, but he’s sweet. I’m gonna cry for 2 chapters & now I’m going to be strong & fight him. It’s repetitive & nauseating.

I started this right before I left for Nashville so that’s why it took me so long to finish this one. This one picks up exactly where the first book left off. At the end of the first book he tells her to kill Stephan. He believes that this will help her heal from the nightmares. So she stabs him, brutally. Carter wants everyone to fear his songbird. At this point Carter still hasn’t kissed her yet. She wants him to kiss her so badly. Aria takes killing Stephan badly. Carter tells her about the first man he ever killed to try to soothe her and he gives her birth control saying better late than never. Aria continues to have nightmares even though Stephan is dead and all she wants is for Carter to hold her. She knows she shouldn’t but she finds so much comfort in his arms. Carter finally kissed aria. He had left her alone with her anxiety for the day and she had questioned him about his picture on the wall which is of his old house. She doesn’t know it but he says that her father is who burned it down and had intended for All of the boys to be inside of it. He kisses her for the first time for comfort in her pain. Carter tells her that the very idea that you’re mine makes me feel as if there isn’t a thing I can’t conquer but actually having you is everything. Aria gives Carter head for the first time and I was confused on this part because he had fucked her face as punishment but she’s acting like this is her first time ever giving head and like he won’t be able to fit in her mouth. Carter builds aria her own escape room. He gives her a place that she can go and no one will bother her. Carter wants to give her everything but the things she wants the most he can’t give her and that’s what the big problem throughout this book is. Aria is still his prisoner and he won’t rest until her father is dead. And he knows she won’t forgive him for killing everyone she’s ever loved. She’s begged him not to. But they’re about to be in war he has to. Carter confesses to aria why he has to have her so bad. She is his songbird she saved him. When her father was about to kill him she banged on the door saying please I need you and in his state he thought she was calling for him. He latched onto her voice and fell in love with her and knew he needed his song bird. Aria sees carters phone and freaks out and hides in her room and won’t tell him why. He tells her that she will be punished for not telling him what is wrong. She had met Addison and they made plans to drink together in the den. Carter said he wouldn’t stop her which shocked her. Wasn’t he scared she’d scare Addison away? He asks when she wants her punishment and she chooses after her plans with Addison. After her plans with Addison she showers and comes to him where he has her lay across his lap and he spanks her until she confesses the reason she ran was from seeing the date on his phone and realizing she missed the anniversary of her mothers death and she has visited her grave every year. During this she confesses she doesn’t know how she can love and hate him at the same time. He latches onto her saying that she loves him. He tells her that he was eager to capture the songbird just to silence the song forever and that’s why he wanted her. He had also confessed to her how her father had tried to kill his entire family and he can’t let him go; her father is a bad man. Carter tells aria he’ll call her father but she has to stay quiet. When he makes the call he has a butt plug inside of her for the first time and makes her cum multiple times throughout the call. She is upset that Carter teased her father but her father used code words to say he would be coming for her and she is torn on what she should do. Her father nor Nikolai will answer her calls. Meanwhile we know that Carter already knows that they’re there and is holding 3 of them captive and the other 3 are dead. Aria takes one of the guns and holds it at Carter and begs him to release her cousins and Nikolai and all he says is “the girl we’ve been waiting for, Talvery”. And then it ends. Was this all a play. Like Carter has to have real feelings for her. We know that she has real feelings for him but she is torn on loving him or protecting the people that she loves and Carter will give her no control or choices. So this is her trying to make a choice to protect her family. I can’t wait to see what happens next I know she won’t shoot Carter she loves him too much but I do know she will be punished. I don’t see any way that their families will be able to make a truce and co exist. This story was called heartless because even though aria would break through carters she’ll his eyes would glaze over and he’d go back to being heartless. That’s how she felt around him like she loved him but knew he could never feel the same way back to her he just doesn’t have the capability of it.

I was introduced to the Dark Romance genre a few years ago now and I absolutely love it. When I saw this bindup at Barnes and Noble, I knew I had to have it.

I didn't review the first book because I honestly wasn't in the best mental state and I kind of stayed away from the internet for a little bit. I'm feeling better now so you're getting this review!

I liked the first book well enough. It wasn't as dark as I like my dark romances to be. I would consider this series slightly dark.

In this second installment, I was constantly waiting for shit to go down. Unfortunately, it doesn't until the end of the book! I really hate when books do that. HATE HATE HATE.

I do really love the sexual tension between Carter and Aria. I feel like they would be perfect together if they both just got over themselves.

I feel like this series is missing something. I don't know what it is though

This book really packs a punch and keeps the reader on the edge of their seats. The connection between Aria and Carter is growing and it is unsettling to both how much they are counting on each other to get through the day. But will Aria once again fall back on the knowledge that she is a prisoner in his house? Or will they both admit that although they started off as prisoner and keeper they are now so much more? With characters you can not help fall in love with and a storyline that has more twists and turns than a roller coaster, once again, Willow Winters does not disappoint. I cannot wait until the next book in the series.

5⭐️ Audible listen. The whole “Carter owns Aria but she has all the power” dynamic interesting. She for sure is having a major impact on him but he refuses to completely voice his feelings. Aria is very open with him but very naive about her family. I know we need the conflict but her repeatedly asking for Carter not to kill anyone is silly since she was raised in the life.

The passion is incredible and even uncomfortable at times. But hey. We’re in it to win it at this point. Carter is such an ass. I guess that’s his appeal

Expect everything you thought you knew about Merciless to be twisted on its head in this book. There are some unexpected twists and turns. The second book in the Merciless series is Heartless. This time, the emphasis is on the push and pull of Carter and Aria's relationship, as well as the growing tension between them. Carter tries to persuade her to follow him as his queen and to recognise that her family needs to be destroyed. Their predicament has no simple solutions, and she is his lone weakness. Although I liked the novel, I felt that, for the most part, the character development took centre stage. Carter's past is explored, allowing us to learn a great deal more about him as a person. I was really excited to read this book after finishing the first one. I required answers for every question I had been left with. While I did receive some answers, I also now need to find the solutions to a few new questions.

“The very idea that you’re mine makes me feel as if there isn’t a thing I can’t conquer. But actually having you is… everything.”
