Pestilence A Medieval Tale of Plague is very well written. I liked learning of Elaisse and her life through this first person fantasy narrative. It was interesting to see a tale told from the perspective of someone living through it rather than by a nonfiction narrative account of the Plague. I liked the storyline and the characters especially Fern and even Elaisse who changes throughout the narrative from a spoiled, selfish brat to someone who considers others and wants to help them. The only thing I found a bit disconcerting were the one or two page descriptions that started each chapter. The first one was well done, but I found that sometimes they were more distracting than helpful. I think they could have been better included as perhaps an afterword of sorts.

“Pestilence: A Medieval Tale of Plague” was sent to me for review. I have never read a book about the Bubonic Plague and this sounded fascinating. Jeani has put a lot of research into this story without it sounding like a historical documentary. I loved how it started with a flea’s perspective of the plague, which was ingenious. Most of the chapters start with an account of the plague from the animals that passed it along which I really enjoyed. Elaisse started out as a very annoying, self-centered, brat but once she chooses to live her own life she becomes much more likable. I liked that she was able to finally start thinking for herself. There is some romance mixed in the story but overall it’s an imaginative tale of a very real horror in history. I give “Pestilence” 4/5 stars, it was a short and easy read but I got a look into a historical event that I’m glad I never had to experience.
