This is a mystery wherein four people at the Boston Public Library hear a woman scream, bond over that and subsequent news someone was murdered, and then get embroiled in trying to figure out who done it because suspicion falls on them.
Its told in kind of distancing third person, intertwined with letters from a fan to a mystery writer (the conceit here is that the main story is her most recent manuscript and the fan is commenting on a draft) that become increasingly unsettling.
Not sure I enjoyed this as much as I wanted to. It felt.....immature. Like the mystery is great, but the dialogue is very play script and less novel. Very stilted and formal offering of coffee and tea over and over again and then just discussing murder, etc. without any emotional impact.
There's a love relationship that didn't quite draw me in (because of overall aforementioned stiltedness) that is supposed to make tension over who the real murderer is...but it just kind of fell flat, because I wasn't invested in them.
The unlayering of folks' backgrounds, the connections between the main four friends, and the increasingly weird and inappropriate (but ultimately unrelated-- it never really affects the narrative nor do we really get to see the results of that story from the author's POV which would have given me somewhere to hang my heart) fan comments are kind of fun-- but in an intellectual puzzle kind of way. (Like Inheritance Games but for adults)

I loved the kind of two plots happening simultaneously. It was very cool and the mystery had me guessing until the very end!
