BookRiot describes this book as "basically space Sherlock Holmes where the ship is Dr. Watson," and that seems largely accurate. (link to BookRiot's review: https://bookriot.com/?p=250958)

However, this book had a lot of world-building and as a result, a less meaty mystery than I usually like. That said, I'm glad I read it, and would read more of them if de Bodard decides to write them. The premise is pretty great, and now that the bulk of the world-building is done, future books might have more room to develop the mystery side of things.

A Brewer of Serenity( who is also a troop transport ship mind with PTSD) who is named as "The Shadow's Child" is asked to brew a tea for a space traveler especially for deep spaces. These special teas helps the travelers keep their mind sane. "The Shadow's Child" not only brews the tea for her customer but ends up transporting the traveler herself. During their journey they find a human dead body who died of unnatural causes and they get entangled with galactic mystery.

An interesting, rather fascinating read. I would like to see this world/plot/characters built into a full fledged novel.
Happy Reading!!

Ship AI and consulting detective.

Good novella, ala Sherlock Holmes with a Ship Mind for a sidekick. Well written, but short. Wish it was longer, but I will keep my eye out for more from this author.

I loved the details of this world and de Bodard’s writing style. The mystery in the last third of this novella wasn’t as engaging for me, but I will continue to read more of the author’s work. There is delightfully so much to choose from.
