Thank You, Mr Nixon is a strong short story collection focussing on the Chinese-American experience and relations between Americans and Chinese, beginning with the 1972 visit of President Nixon to China and traversing fifty years including the Hong Kong protests and Covid. The power of this book lies not in any single story - although there are some very good ones- but in the collection as a whole, as the themes repeat and build upon each other. The stories are loosely interconnected mainly through characters - a minor character in one story pops up as the protagonist in a later story. Spotting these connections added an extra element of fun to the reading experience. Themes of national and cultural identity, migration, generational divisions, family, politics, capitalism, cultural differences and misunderstandings are explored with depth, nuance, compassion evenhandedness and sometimes humour. Really glad the #carolshieldsprize longlist put this book on my radar.
Moderate: Racism
