A spectacular and spooky twist on a classic, with a wry vein of humor carrying through it all. Great world building, with just enough of the horror explained to make the remaining unknown extremely unsettling.

Obsessed. The quick witted gender nonconforming protagonist is an absolute delight. I will happily venture into the unknown with kan again and again. The dark gothic fungi infested mysteries of this book broke a spell of artists block for me that had gone on for over 6 months. Highly recommend if you enjoy fungi, dead things, rotting houses, and gothic mysteries.

The pseudo fantastical nature was foreboding and creepy in a good way, but I'm not a big horror person so I mostly just wanted to get away from the sentient fungi.  I did read the short story it is based on which was predominantly vibes, and I liked this reinterpretation of it more than the original because the characters had much more depth.

My sibling suggested this book to me as it is pretty short.

It was definitely short. I am still working on my language level English, so there were some parts that were hard for me to get through. I would almost say the first half of the book is a bit boring. But the end is in my opinion definitely a great ending. The second half was great and I could really feel the curiosity and adrenaline run through my body. I remember being weirded out at the end (not sure if it was in a bad way or not).

If you're thinking of reading this, I would definitely give it a shot. It's fun to have read..

I love the characters, particularly the narrator, of this brilliant novella that expands on The Fall of the House of Usher. It's sublime, grotesque, full of heart, progressive, thrilling and chilling. Brilliantly told. Brilliantly read on the audiobook. A firm favourite.
