Just kept waiting for it to take-off and flow. Didn't like the Julia character and if it had been set in the 50s or 60s it would have made more sense.
I liked reading this book even though I wouldn’t say it’s a great book. The characters aren’t well developed. The only narrators were Julia, Sylvie and William, which really focuses the story on their love triangle instead of on family bonds. Why not include POV from Emeline and Cecelia? I did like the attention on how humans sometimes repeat their parents’ mistakes even when running in the other direction. I also appreciated how the characters tried to love and be loved in ways that were actually very unloving.
In reading reviews after, I was interested in the differing opinions on Julia’s behaviour. Some found her insufferable and selfish, some found her completely justified and couldn’t believe the family forgave Sylvie’s betrayal so quickly. I love this disagreement and I think it is telling about life and relationships and I appreciate the author captured that.

This was beautiful, and I didn’t even grow up with sisters. This is loosely based on Little Women. William and the Padavano family, especially the sisters, all mix paths. Different sections of the book focus on the different characters, and I think the complexities and heartbreak of ever changing familial relationships mixed in with the suffering of life suck you right in. This one has a deep sadness, beauty, and love to it. It’s not a flashy read, but I did enjoy it quite a bit.

I loved the pace and the flow of this, I love a book that spans decades and you can grow with the characters. This would have been a near 5 star read if it wasn't for a major plot choice that just felt completely unbelievable and untethered me from the characters emotionally.
I understand why Oprah was handing this book out like candy
