Vigdis Hjorth paints a perfect picture of generational trauma. How a mother's influence follows you unceasingly through life.
I found it particularly impressive the way Hjorth unearthed the contradictions of motherhood. The way a child deifies their mother and then how time shatters that illusion unmasks the mother, to reveal a flawed, imperfect, human.
The protagonists slow, growing obsession with her mother and her increasingly brazen attempts to get closer to and to reconcile with her are compelling and odly understandable.
I feel as though Hjorth has unearthed a universal plight in Is Mother Dead
The desire to understand the enigma that is your mother.
